Broshim School is a special education primary school for children with learning disabilities, and had been housed in a 19th century monastary building for many years, on Rehov Hamayan, in the heart of the Ein Kerem conservation area.
- Design Concept
The programme called for addition of 9 new classrooms and a sports hall, and renovation of the existing building for special facilities.
The design placed the new classrooms to the west and the sports hall to the east of the historic structure, and integrated all with circulation through the lower arcade of the old building.
The detailing of the new facades took corner pilasters, window surround details and stone string courses from the old building, and integrated them with the functional requirements of the modern structure.
The main entrance balcony to the old building, and the paved roof of the sports hall entrance structure, form a gallery overlooking the main school courtyard at the lower level, with backdrop of old buildings and trees, a natural human scale "theatre" for school activities.
