Sha'are Zedek Day Center & Nursing Home for the Elderly, Jerusalem
- Planning
Ruth Lahav, Tony Rigg & Len Warshaw, 1989
Client: Jewish Agency, Project Renewal
Built area: 6,000m²
Structural engineer: Yosi Gordon, Jerusalem
Plumbing engineer: Avraham Swartz, Jerusalem
The project was completed almost to tender stage, when a dispute over ownership resulted in the cancellation of the project. - The Area
The old Sha'are Zedek Hospital, built around 1895, is listed as a National Monument.
After the Hospital moved to new premises in 1977, the building became derelict.
The Jewish Agency took on renovation of the building as part of its Inner City Renewal project, to serve as a residential home and daycentre for the elderly of the surrounding areas. - Design Concept
The scheme used the existing ground floor for the daycentre, and then in place of the high second floor, inserted two upper levels, adding only 70cm to the height of the building.
The second level contained a residential home for 50 persons, and the upper level a nursing home for 38 persons, with roof terraces and patios.
The basement/ lower ground floor was extended out to the south to accommodate a clinic and a large meeting room, and an exit to the gardens. The roof of this extension provided a large south facing terrace for the daycentre.
Other basement areas provided service, storage and kitchen facilities.
The renovation and reconstruction works were designed to make only the most minimal changes to the original building, and the design was approved by all the authorities.
